MINISTRY TO THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY
Consistent with our Vision, Agape reaches out with God’s unconditional love to one of the most marginalized groups in Gaston County, the LBGTQ community. We join with our local PFLAG chapter [Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays] as members attending meetings, participating, sponsoring and supporting community events and serving as allies to the individual members.
Additionally, Agape sponsors and supports the Gaston County satellite of Time Out Youth of Charlotte. We provide meals and serve as hosts for the meetings on a quarterly basis. Three of our members have been trained as volunteers and provide a supporting presence during the meetings.
HERITAGE OAKS ASSISTED LIVING CENTER
Since its establishment in 2011, Agape has had a special relationship with the residents of Heritage Oaks, an assisted living facility in Gastonia, NC. We join with them weekly for fellowship and games and host a monthly birthday celebration for all of the residents. Each Christmas we host a Happy Birthday Jesus celebration and provide each of the residents with gifts. Over the years we have worshiped with them, invited them to picnics and outings, and helped them with a service project, providing the residents with an opportunity to share their love with others and maintain healthy lifestyles. Several of the residents join us weekly for worship.
Vera Huntsinger is our Health Coordinator. Vera has over 44 years experience as an R.N. After her retirement, Vera began serving as Parish Nurse/Health Coordinator. In her capacity, Vera is available to discuss health issues and provide in home and hospital visits. In addition, Vera provides education and advocacy for those in need.
In addition to reaching out and serving the Gaston County community, members of Agape are committed to annual missions trip that include working with at risk youth and advocating for people of color.
